I can’t explain why but I have an overwhelming feeling that 2018 is going to be an incredible year filled with opportunity, excitement and abundance for us all. I am not going to fight the feeling, I am just going to enjoy it!
I have been thinking a lot this week about what I wanted to focus on in this first blog of 2018. As it is the start of a New Year there are so many obvious choices such as how to set intentions for the year, goal setting, fresh starts etc. however we have covered some of these topics over the past 3 months or so and so I wanted to focus on something different that would add value to you in a different way.
So, I decided that I would share with you the reason why I have become passionate about using Essential Oils as part of my daily self-care routine and around my home.
If you are anything like me, you will have been seduced in to buying things to make your home smell nice for years! My first obsession was with pot pourri way back in the 90s. I can remember buying bags of the stuff because it always smelt so good in the shop and yet the moment that you put it in a bowl, the smell seemed to evaporate almost immediately (unless of course you pretty much buried your head in the bowl!)
My second obsession has been scented candles. I have been on the hunt for the perfect, long lasting scented candle for most of my adult life. Again, I have often been left disappointed when the fragrance of the candle seems to disappear as soon as it is lit and the first few millimetres of wax have burnt that contained the enticing fragrance in the first place. That said, I have managed to find a brand that I will always return to because they do scent the room with a lasting fragrance and that is Jo Malone and most recently Jo Loves. My husband Rob is less keen on the impact that the smoke from burning candles has on our nicely painted walls!
Over the past few months though I have discovered Essential Oils and this has been a game changer for me. My interest in oils started a couple of years ago when Rob and I stayed in a luxury spa hotel in Mexico for a holiday. The whole of the hotel smelled delicious and we even had an aromatherapy menu in our room! Each day you could request a different scent and each night an oil burner would be placed in the room with your chosen oil. I was in my element! A set of the hotel oils was purchased and when I returned home it became my mission to make my home smell beautiful. And it did!
However, what I had not realised are the emotional and health benefits that can be derived from using good quality essential oils on a regular basis. When I started to explore this as part of my own daily wellbeing practice my mind was literally blown away by the health benefits that high quality essential oils can provide! I had literally thought these oils were just about making my home smell good.
The challenge, as with most of these things, is finding a brand that is good quality as a lot of essential oils that you purchase often use synthetic additives to give the oil the smell. Trust me when I say that you can really notice a difference when you smell the real thing!
I was introduced to a brand of oils called DoTerra and I have fallen in love with them. So much so that I have shared these oils with family and friends as Christmas presents as I have become so passionate about the benefits the DoTerra oils provide.
You can use the oils in three ways (something that I also did not realise until recently!):
Aromatically – by placing the oils in a diffuser and allowing the aroma to fill the room. I now have diffusers in four rooms in our house so that I can diffuse the perfect oil for the mood. I have been using an oil blend called Serenity in our bedroom at night and I have been sleeping so peacefully it has been a true gift! I also diffused a blend called Breathe over Christmas and New Year when Rob and I were both ill with the flu and it really helped us breathe easily and recover faster. You can also just place one drop of the oil in the palm of your hand, rub them together and then inhale for an immediate boost.
Topically – by rubbing them in to areas of your body (although most oils should be diluted first to avoid any irritation to the skin). You can also dilute them in the bath to give you a spa experience at home. They are divine for that and I have literally never had so many baths since I started using these oils. Rob enjoys them in the bath too (but don’t tell him I told you!)
Internally – some of the oils can also be ingested to support boosting your immune system or to help things like your digestion.
The more I researched the oils, the more I became fascinated by the benefits that oils can provide.
I wanted to share some of my favourites with you and their primary uses:
Lemon (the oil of focus) – Lemon oil is beautiful and helps to engage the mind and bring clarity. If you are struggling to focus or are feeling fatigued, Lemon oil is a great way to give yourself a boost! You can either diffuse the oil or you can dilute it with some carrier oil and apply on your wrists and temples. It is so beautiful!
Peppermint (the oil of a buoyant heart) – This is one of my favourites and I often have this diffusing in my home office. If you are feeling low (especially at this time of year when the days are short) then Peppermint can be used to lift your mood. I find it really uplifting and energising. Peppermint is also great if you have a headache! You can either diffuse it or mix it with some carrier oil and either rub it on your temples, the back of your neck or the soles of your feet.
Lavender (the oil of communication and calm) – This is another oil that I love because it helps to calm the mind. If you have had a busy, stressful day, then Lavender oil will really help you to unwind and relax. This is an oil I often use in the bath before I go to bed. This oil can also help calm any insecurities that you might be experiencing. It really is a power oil! Again, you can use this in a diffuser in your bedroom before you go to sleep or put a couple of drops in a carrier oil and rub it on the soles of your feet.
I could list so many more but the three oils above are a great starting point and cover so many aspects of emotional and physical wellbeing.
I use DoTerra oils because all their oils are Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade and are carefully extracted from plants. They do not contain anything other than the pure plant oils. I also love that DoTerra oils are ethically sourced and they support the communities where the oils are harvested. It makes my heart happy knowing that communities are being supported and invested in and through the use of these oils, I am contributing to the growth, development and support of others.
As you can tell, I am a fan! I have finally found something that not only makes my home smell divine, I have found something that supports my growth on an emotional and physical level and that ethically resonates with my values. Priceless.
